U of M Senior Fashion Show (full review)

Last Saturday, a sold-out crowd packed Rapson Hall to view one of the strongest student showing the Twin Cities has seen in sometime. For the 42nd year running, the 11 graduating seniors from the University of Minnesota's School of Design attempted to put their best foot forward, and they largely succeeded. [...]

Mathematician uses the Drake Equation to Determine His Chances of Getting Laid
posted by alexism in science!

I love this. The Drake Equation is an equation used to calculate the potential number of extraterrestrial beings living in our galaxy. It looks like this: N = R* x fp x ne x fl x fi x fc x L where: N = the number of civilizations in our galaxy with which communication might be possible; and R* = the average rate of star formation per year in our galaxy fp = the fraction of those stars that have planets ne = the average number of planets that can potentially support life per star that has planets fl = the fraction of the above that actually go on to develop life at some point fi = the fraction of the above that actually go on to develop intelligent life fc = the fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space L = the length of time such civilizations release detectable signals into space. The Powerful Sexuality of Wonder Woman
posted by alexism in BDSM

I was just leaving a witty comment on crabfisher's Facebook wall which prompted me to engage in one of my all-time favorite activities: Wikipedia-ing. I landed on the entry on William Moulton Marston, a/k/a Charles Moulton, creator of the comic book superhero Wonder Woman, and I learned a couple of things I most certainly did not know as a young girl who idolized a lady with magical accessories. Ideas for Christmas 2009
created by mcsnappants

For some reason Christmas keeps showing up earlier and earlier in retail stores.  It is a crazy time of the year, starting with deaths from shopping on Black Friday (the day after thanksgiving).  Extra staff are hired for retail stores to keep up with the holiday madness.  People go broke trying to impress their friends and family with presents.  I don't know how many years I wrapped all of my perfect gifts, only to go out shopping again fearing I didn't get people enough. On December 25th, items are marked at full price, but merely 24 hours later, stores mark items down drastically!!!  If we wait those extra hours the holiday can be affordable.  Many kids have more toys than they can use, so this year instead of adding to the household clutter and to the amount you have to pick up, maybe we could all donate toys to those who have none.  It would also be a good learning experience for our kids!!I don't want to come off as a saint here, but there are many ideas we could share with each other on homemade gifts or ideas to make the holidays more meaningful and affordable..... To further clarify a misconception we've seen pop up on the Twittersphere regarding our upcoming contest... Vita.mn will not claim any kind of ownership over submitted material (whether it's audio or visual). All materials submitted will ONLY be used in relation to this campaign. What you submit will be available for public consumption on our nominee page, yes, but Vita.mn will also be printing up more than 1,500 download cards for all our guests at First Ave that will feature songs from the three finalists.
