Tech: Summer safeguards for gadgets

The DryCASE

Summer is here so it's time to take your portable electronic gadgets for a swim -- but only if you protect them with one of these waterproofing or water-resistant accessories. Always follow the manufacturers' instructions before using any of these devices since they will not replace your personal device in the event of failure.

VACUUM-SEALED SECURITY

Dry Corp's DryCASE ($39.99) promises protection for your cellphone, camera or MP3 player in up to 100 feet of water. After you seal your device in the plastic bag and remove the air with the included pump, the vacuum seal keeps your device and any touch-screen controls or buttons fully accessible. The DryBUDS SPORT waterproof earbuds and microphone ($39.99) are built with an over-ear clip for a secure fit and are submersible up to 10 feet.

STAY FUNCTIONAL

Several companies have protective cases designed specifically for the iPhone 4/4S. The ECO MarineCase ($39.99) from Keystone is rain-, snow- and sand-proof and can be taken in water up to 20 feet deep. It's made with a clear protective silicone cover for full touch-screen functionality. It's also advertised as shock-proof.

DESIGNED TO PLAY OUTSIDE

LifeProof's Let's Go! iPhone cases are designed to work with special accessories (sold separately) so you can take your iPhone 4/4S into the great outdoors. The case provides protection from water, dirt, snow and shock. For swimming, the case has been tested to be waterproof up to 6.6 feet. The LifeProof iPhone case ($79.99) is incredibly durable for everyday use when used with the belt clip accessory ($29.99). For adventurous bike warriors, you'll need LifeProof's bike and bar mount ($39.99).

SPEAKER MAKES A SPLASH

The G-Project G-Go wireless Bluetooth speaker ($69.99) from Life Lab International is water-resistant and makes a great poolside addition. A fresh set of four AA batteries can give you up to eight hours of listening. Keep in mind that although this speaker is water-resistant, you don't want it submerged or exposed to direct streams of water. It also has an audio line-in port to connect non-Bluetooth devices along with a USB port.

A BAG FOR ALL SEASONS
