Red, white and booze
Any chump can show patriotism with sparklers and flag-colored cupcakes. So as July 4th approaches, we say: Go the extra mile -- hit the bars! Here are a few all-American bar specials that will make you flip your colonial wig.
Williams Uptown Pub and Peanut Bar
2911 Hennepin Av. S., Mpls. • 612-823-6271
Much like obesity and football, we in the land of liberty are doing beer better than anyone in the world (what up, Belgium?). This July 4th fittingly falls on a Wednesday -- the same night Williams salutes U.S. beers by offering $3 pints of any stateside-born brew from 7 p.m. to midnight. Celebrate our hoppy hegemony at the Uptown institution.
Burger Jones
3200 W. Lake St., Mpls. • 612-746-0800 • www.burgerjones.com
Nothing is more American than red meat. Rather than flipping your own patties, let the folks at the Calhoun burger joint ready your artery-clogging eats for you. If you like a little innuendo with your beef, try the "Late Night BJ" from 9 p.m.-close nightly, when a cheeseburger-and-fries combo fetches just $7. Wash it down with $3-$4 select taps and $3 wells and house wines.
Icehouse
2528 Nicollet Av. S., Mpls. • 612-276-6523 • www.icehousempls.com
If you're looking for some tunes to jump-start your patriot pride and for some reason cranking Springsteen in your garage ain't cutting it, try Icehouse's Monday night jazz series (9:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. sets, $5 cover). Jazz may not have the Boss' tight-jeaned adrenaline, but it's considered by many to be the only true American art form. It's too late for happy hour, but a buck gets you a squirt of whiskey straight from a mustard bottle. Only in America.
