Food + drink: Tequila deals
MICHAEL RIETMULDER | Updated 9/7/2012
If National Tequila Day (this Tuesday) isn't circled on your calendar, that's probably a testament to your good health. But don't judge us for getting stoked about a made-up holiday that involves booze and absolutely no familial obligations. Toast the spirit responsible for millions of atrocious spring-break decisions with these specials.
Barrio Lowertown
235 E. 6th St., St. Paul • 651-222-3250 • www.barriotequila.com
Celebrating with the tequila tycoons at Barrio would be apropos, and luckily the Lowertown location's happy hour (3-6 p.m. Mon.-Fri. and 10 p.m.-close Sun.-Thu.) features a discount on the drink tequila was practically made for -- the margarita. Stop in for a $5 house margarita or sample selections from the solid tequila list.
Rosa Mexicano
609 Hennepin Av. S., Mpls. • 612-656-7144 • www.rosamexicano.com
Not only does this upscale Mexican joint offer a pair of margaritas for about $5 during its daily happy hour (plus a late-night frozen pomegranate version), but Rosa has something for those looking to put a little pep in their party. From 3 to 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. to close, shots of 1800 Tequila flow for $5.50. It might not have the rap-video cred of Patron, but that guy from "The Sopranos" endorses it, so that's just as good, right?
Masa
1070 Nicollet Mall, Mpls. • 612-338-6272 • www. masa-restaurant.com
Though not the place for a "wild out," worm-eating type of experience (we're looking at you, sloppy sorority girls), Masa isn't a bad pick for your tequila intake. During its 4 to 6 p.m. weekday happy hour, margaritas are half-priced -- ditto sangria, taps and glasses of wine -- at the bar or patio. While you're at it, try some sophisticated south-of-the-border fare with select $2-$5 apps or $2.50 tacos.
