SATURDAY

Extreme Race Day

No, it's not the unveiling of a far-out breed of genome super-soldier -- it's wacky animal racing day at Canterbury Park! Bear witness to humanity's extreme dominion over the animal kingdom as jockeys round the track atop camels and ostriches. Will the camels spit? How does one handicap an ostrich? Will either fringe beast eventually replace the horse? The answers will be revealed Saturday. It's also Family Day at Canterbury, so round up the young'uns and head to the track for free pony rides, face painting and a petting zoo. Stick around for the Old Dutch Kids Race the Track event, an all-human competition that will crown the Secretariat of children. (1:30 p.m. Sat. $5; 17 & under free. Canterbury Park, 1100 Canterbury Rd., Shakopee. 952-445-7223 or www.canterburypark.com.) - JAY BOLLER

ArtCar + ArtBike Parade

Art, once reserved for museum walls and sculpture gardens, enjoys its 18th year shellacked onto automobiles and bicycles as part of the ArtCar + ArtBike parade at Lake Harriet. Bring a lawn chair and drink in the cavalcade of wheeled devices affixed with a loads of crazy crap (some with genuine artistic merit, too). It's fun, it's a cheap thrill, it's a Twin Cities tradition. Spoiler alert: The fabled Couchmobile will also make its way around the lake. Have your own zany ride? Line up at the Lyndale Park Rose Garden at 5 p.m. to be part of the festivities. (6 p.m. Sat. Free. Lake Harriet, Mpls. www.artcarparade.com.) - J.B.

SUNDAY

Laborial Day

Leave it to the folks behind Trivia Mafia to come up with the most trivial of holidays: Laborial Day, marking the halfway point between Memorial Day and Labor Day. To celebrate, they're throwing a trivia pub crawl spanning northeast Minneapolis, capped by the crowning of the King or Queen of Laborial Day -- namely, the finder of the "Laborial Stone" in a monthlong scavenger hunt proceeding the big day. Oh, and you're supposed to wear black and white, the "sacred" colors of Laborial Day. The crawl begins and ends at the 331 Club, where Trivia Mafia hosts their regular trivia night at 8 p.m., with live music, snacks and prizes along the way. (5-11 p.m. Sun. Free. 331 Club, 331 13th Av. NE., Mpls., www.triviamafia.com.) - JAHNA PELOQUIN
