Local choreographer Thorson has had a good couple of years, earning prestigious fellowships and creating commissioned work. Now she presents the local premiere of her evening-length ensemble dance "Spaceholder Festival" before it tours to Milwaukee, San Francisco and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Thorson and her cast of excellent movers (Max Wirsing, Karen Sherman, Jessica Cressey, Hannah Kramer and Kristin Van Loon) will explore patterns of human behavior drawn from the stories we tell ourselves -- true and false. Few artists can cue into the idiosyncrasies of movement better than Thorson. Expect thought-provoking work from one of our most innovative voices in dance. (8 p.m. Fri.-Sun., Wed.-next Thu. $8-$15. Red Eye Theater, 14 W. 15th St., Mpls., 612-870-0309, www.redeyetheater.org.) - CAROLINE PALMER
Groundbreaker Battle Festival
Crews will be squaring off for the Groundbreaker Battle on Saturday in the parking lot behind the Cowles Center (or the City Center Atrium across the street if it rains). This fourth annual celebration of all things hip-hop will feature head-to-head dance-offs as well as performances by Ill Chemistry and B-Boy J-Sun's group, workshops throughout the day, a panel discussion and a graffiti installation plus a variety of hip-hop and food vendors. MCs include Desdamona and Carnage the Executioner, while DJ Nikoless will spin the latest sounds. This year crews competing for cash prizes will try to impress judges Daylight, Sequel and Kraze, so come out and make some noise for your champions of the dance floor. (Noon-8 p.m. Sat. Free. Cowles Center, 528 Hennepin Av. S., Mpls. 612-206-3600 or www.thecowlescenter.org.) - C.P.
Nadine DuBois and the Showboat Follies
As founder of Lili's Burlesque, Nadine DuBois has helped put the Twin Cities on the modern burlesque map. Now, the quick-witted hostess-with-the-mostest takes her show on the boat for an old-timey late-night vaudeville romp aboard the Minnesota Centennial Showboat. DuBois will be flanked by a chorus of sirens, a swinging live band, vaudevillian characters and the Follies Dancers. With a night of glitter, spectacle and comedy on the high seas, it'd be hard to go wrong. (11 p.m. Sat. & July 28. $15. Harriet Island, Harriet Island Rd. & N. Wabasha St., St. Paul. 651-227-1100 or theatre.umn.edu/showboat/afterdark.) - JAHNA PELOQUIN
