The Studio Ghibli Collection: 1984-2009

Updated 11/21/2012

A scene from Spirited Away.

When: Friday through Nov. 29. Where: Lagoon Cinema.

For the next two weeks, it's possible to see 14 animated masterworks of Hayao Miyazaki in 35mm prints on the big screen they deserve. "The Studio Ghibli Collection: 1984-2009" showcases the ethereal creations of the producer-director often called Japan's Walt Disney. The description captures Miyazaki's ambition and attention to detail, but ignores his whimsical, visually stunning sensibility, a world away from Disney's white-bread esthetic and good-vs.-evil story lines. The 25-year retrospective includes the fable-like "Spirited Away," "Howl's Moving Castle," "Kiki's Delivery Story" and "Princess Mononoke" as well as the rarely seen airborne adventure "Porco Rosso" and the Simpsons-like comedy "My Neighbors the Yamadas." "My Neighbor Totoro" is presented in English, all others in subtitled Japanese. Complete schedule via www.startribune.com/a1885. COLIN COVERT
