While her "doom soul" self-descriptor seems a bit menacing (maybe gospel glum?), the Canadian-born singer-songwriter's thick, trembling voice has a spirit-stirring quality. This year the promising Al Spx, 24, released her sterling debut album, "I Predict a Graceful Expulsion," which fuses elements of folk and Deep South gospel with a strength-through-the-darkness undertow. While a breakout solo performance on "Later ... With Jools Holland" garnered some attention, the now Londoner has said she prefers playing with her five-piece band, as she is on this tour.
