Vampire Weekend covers Rancid Indie rock fans had a collective WTF moment yesterday when blog Abeano Music posted an MP3 of Vampire Weekend's cerebral take on Rancid's 1995 pop-punk classic "Ruby Soho." Link The heavily buzzed-about neo-Afro-poppers yank the fangs from the original, but the spacey cover is a nostalgic treat. [...] |
Mathematician uses the Drake Equation to Determine His Chances of Getting Laid I love this. The Drake Equation is an equation used to calculate the potential number of extraterrestrial beings living in our galaxy. It looks like this: N = R* x fp x ne x fl x fi x fc x L where: N = the number of civilizations in our galaxy with which communication might be possible; and R* = the average rate of star formation per year in our galaxy fp = the fraction of those stars that have planets ne = the average number of planets that can potentially support life per star that has planets fl = the fraction of the above that actually go on to develop life at some point fi = the fraction of the above that actually go on to develop intelligent life fc = the fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space L = the length of time such civilizations release detectable signals into space. Ideas for Christmas 2009
For some reason Christmas keeps showing up earlier and earlier in retail stores. It is a crazy time of the year, starting with deaths from shopping on Black Friday (the day after thanksgiving). Extra staff are hired for retail stores to keep up with the holiday madness. People go broke trying to impress their friends and family with presents. I don't know how many years I wrapped all of my perfect gifts, only to go out shopping again fearing I didn't get people enough. On December 25th, items are marked at full price, but merely 24 hours later, stores mark items down drastically!!! If we wait those extra hours the holiday can be affordable. Many kids have more toys than they can use, so this year instead of adding to the household clutter and to the amount you have to pick up, maybe we could all donate toys to those who have none. It would also be a good learning experience for our kids!!I don't want to come off as a saint here, but there are many ideas we could share with each other on homemade gifts or ideas to make the holidays more meaningful and affordable..... Site Wish List Since the elves are already hard at work on a mobile app, can I add something else to the vita.mn site-related wish list? I'd like to be able to un-tag things that I myself have tagged. I'd also like to see a Simon bio on the left side of this page. What's up with that, Simon? [...] |
