SATURDAY

‘Doctor Who’ 50th Anniversary

“Doctor Who,” the landmark British sci-fi series, is celebrating its milestone birthday with a made-for-TV movie Friday about the show’s creation, a game-changing new episode Saturday afternoon, and local anniversary events. Only about 1.5 million people watch the series on BBC America, but it’s a loyal base that forms fan clubs and storms conventions. The movie about the show, “An Adventure in Space and Time,” airs at 8 p.m. Friday on BBC America. Tickets sold out long ago to a big-screen 3-D showing at AMC Southdale of the 50th anniversary episode (1:50 p.m. Sat.), the same time it premieres on TV. More local theaters will reprise the 3-D screening on Monday; check www.fathomevents.com for info. The Twin Cities Doctor Who Meetup Group is holding a trivia contest at Pepito’s (10:30 a.m. Sat., 4820 Chicago Av. S., Mpls.) and throwing a 50th anniversary party at the adjacent Parkway Theater, with a costume contest and special clips on the big screen (5 p.m. Sat., 4814 Chicago Av. S., Mpls. $5 to enter costume contest; otherwise free. Register at www.meetup.com/tcdoctorwho.) Neal Justin

SUNDAY

Gastro Non Grata: Presurfeit Perdition

The word “surfeit” means “an excessive amount of something” — so we’re taking “Presurfeit Perdition” to refer to the upcoming exercise in excess known as Thanksgiving. The long-running Gastro Non Grata food-and-drink experience will give you the chance to get your stomach muscles in gear with meaty samplings from Burch Steak and Pizza Bar and flavorful beer samples from Surly Brewing. The loud-and-fast music lineup of Dumpster Juice, Green Bay punk band Rev Norb and the Onions, Narco States and DJ Shannon Blowtorch will keep your blood pumping (all the better to digest those calories!), and the lucky winner of the Clancey’s Meat & Fish raffle will take home either a pound of chorizo or an entire beef heart. (7 p.m. Sun. $12-$15. 21 & older. Triple Rock Social Club, 629 Cedar Av. S., Mpls. gastronongrata.blogspot.com.) Jahna Peloquin
