Vita.mn's Are You Local? contest

Finalist: Audio Perm

Finalist: Bad Bad Hats

Finalist: Carroll

The next 10: Honorable mentions

In January, Vita.mn asked upstart Twin Cities bands to sign up for our fourth annual Are You Local? new-band contest. A mind-blowing 223 acts uploaded songs at www.vita.mn (down 6 percent from 236 last year). The public listened and voted, and three finalists emerged. (Memo for next year: More finalists, please. Three out of 223 is kind of insane.)

Now these three divergent acts — rap squad Audio Perm, indie-folkers Bad Bad Hats and synth-poppers Carroll — will square off Friday at the Are You Local? showcase in the downstairs Nether Bar at Mill City Nights. The winner will instantly join our star-studded lineup upstairs with Solid Gold, Sims and others, and get $1,000 of travel money to join us at the MN Nice Showcase at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, on March 15.

Read about the groups in the links below and come out Friday to find out who advances. And because plenty of great bands signed up this year, check out our 10 honorable mentions from the contest.
