You may already be familiar with Lena Dunham's "Your First Time" ad, wherein she not-so-delicately compares your first vote to your first lay.
"It should be with a guy with beautiful …" the creator of HBO's "Girls" rambles, deciding how specific she wants to be about this metaphor, and then ultimately giving up on the sentence. "You don't want to do it with a guy who says 'Oh hey, I'm at the library studying,' when really he's out NOT signing the Lilly Ledbetter Act," she continues. Ah, now we get it … kinda.
Yes, the video is inelegant and unnecessarily provocative (women's rights can be discussed outside of sexual metaphors, right?), but her sitcom "Girls" is one medium through which messages actually do get to young women of voting age. Who's it going to hurt?
But at least one person is finding the video more than just awkward: She's finding it satanic. We're talking about Minnesota GOPer Kelly Fenton. In a tweet that has since been deleted, the Republican Party of Minnesota deputy chairperson wrote, "#MyFirstTime ad by #Obama is similar to an ad #Putin did. They must share the same advisor: #Satan." Here's a screenshot, courtesy of Jezebel.
Wonder if "Girls" producer Judd Apatow has also been accused of advising the Putin administration? Claims of worshiping the devil notwithstanding, Dunham does get one point right: Voting for the first time does help transform you into a real adult.
