Phil Vassar event
High-energy piano man Phil Vassar turns into something of a southern Billy Joel on the current concept CD, “Prayer of a Common Man.” He gets a little too theatrical at times and a bit too obvious on “My Chevrolet,” with its references to Bob Seger. Of course, he gets carried away in concert, even doing a medley of hair-metal hits from the 1980s. But the flip side is that the recently divorced father of two is a softie, as evidenced by the recent No. 2 country hit, “Love Is a Beautiful Thing,” a sentimental wedding story. Jon Bream
