Kathy Mattea with the Minnesota Orchestra-CANCELLED event

save   |  tag

For more than a decade, Kathy Mattea has been straying from the mainstream country that made her famous. After several rootsy recordings, she mined a bluegrass vein on 2008’s “Coal,” a passionate look at the lives of coal miners. The West Virginia native (both her grandfathers were miners) interprets mining songs by Merle Travis, Hazel Dickens and others. It’s passionate stuff but doesn’t lend itself to orchestral accompaniment, which will be Mattea’s situation on Saturday. Instead, she and the Minnesota Orchestra, under Sarah Hicks, will concentrate on Mattea’s best-known country tunes, which was the case when they collaborated two years ago. However, for her Sunday gig, Mattea will be accompanied by her trio, so “Coal” may fuel that concert. Jon Bream
