Girls event

save   |  tag

New York’s venerable Matador Records was so smitten with San Francisco fuzz-pop band Girls — led by vaguely girly frontman Christopher Owens — it didn’t just sign the band, it bought up Girls’ own homegrown record label, True Panther Sounds. The resulting debut release, simply titled “Album” (give these guys props for brevity), is a similarly simple, straight-ahead garage-rock spin on Beach Boys pop music that’s weirdly dark underneath the sunny melodies. Rumors of drug-baked sessions and Owens’ purported childhood in a religious cult have made Girls’ deserved hype all the bigger. San Fran duo Dominant Legs opens. Chris Riemenschneider
