REVIEW

On my second visit to Cavé Vin, the new French bistro at 56th St. and Xerxes Av. S. in south Minneapolis, I decided to bring along some wads of cotton for my ears and a set of artsy French postcards.

I liked the basic concept behind Cavé Vin a lot, but I thought a lower decibel level and some nice pictures to look at might improve the experience a great deal.

It did. From time to time, when I felt the need for more ambiance than the bare Venetian plaster walls could provide, I took a postcard picture of a Rodin sculpture out of my pocket and gazed at it, and when I wanted to hear what my wife was saying to me, I took the cotton out of my ears. Except for some hand-blown glass lighting fixtures -- and some sconces that will be arriving soon -- the decor is pretty minimal.

Also on the way are marble-topped counters with seats for the bar and in front of the open kitchen, as well as a 16-seat community table in the middle of the dining room.

Cavé Vin is the French cousin of Pane Vino Dolce, a south Minneapolis trattoria that offers simple but tasty Italian cuisine at moderate prices, also in a setting of high decibels and minimal decor. To be fair, the noise level isn't nearly as bad at Cavé Vin as at PVD, where it can actually be painful, and drapes and carpeting reportedly will soon be installed at Cavé Vin, which may improve matters.
