Deals: Steakhouse happy hours

MICHAEL RIETMULDER | Updated 9/23/2013

Even penny pinchers can soak up steakhouse style.

Murray's on S. 6th Street in downtown Minneapolis.

Even the most ardent vegetarians have to admit there’s nothing quite like that classic steakhouse swagger. If filet traders were mid-aughts rap stars, they’d be poppin’ their collars, boasting of elegant service and penning fusion diss tracks (chophoused and screwed?). A primo cut might cost a pretty penny, but it doesn’t take much to soak up steak-joint style during happy hour.

Jax Cafe

1928 University Av. NE., Mpls. • 612-789-7297 • www.jaxcafe.com

Proving more timeless than Bone Crusher (“I ain’t never scared!”), Jax has kept its cool since opening after Prohibition ended in 1933. Saunter into the distinguished 80-year-old supper club between 3:30 and 6 p.m. daily or 9-10 p.m. Thursday to Saturday and enjoy select $3 domestic bottles, $4 pints or $5 wines and cocktails barside or on the patio.

Murray’s

26 S. 6th St., Mpls. • 612-339-0909 • www.murraysrestaurant.com

With a name like Murray’s, this time-tested upscale steakhouse could just as easily be a dirty-glass dive bar. Thankfully, the Silver Butter Knife slingers are a classy bunch and prefer porterhouses to warm PBRs. Still, those on dive-bar budgets can take advantage of $4 taps, $5 select wines and half-price rails and select apps weekdays from 4 to 7 p.m.

Kincaid’s St. Paul

380 St. Peter St., St. Paul • 651-602-9000 • www.kincaids.com

No need to save this downtown St. Paul steak and seafood restaurant for a special-occasion splurge. Post up in the lounge for happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. to close Monday through Saturday and all day Sunday to enjoy select $4 taps and wines, $5 cocktails and discounted apps.
