Can we go ahead and call these "slam-dunk deals"?

With the NBA season starting this week, Timberwolves fans will be returning to Target Center. A new season often brings a fresh sense of optimism. But as a rule of thumb, watching Minnesota sports generally requires some pacifying booze (Lynx excluded). Get started with these pregame happy hours.

Bar 508

508 1st Av. N., Mpls. • 612-339-0036 • www.bar508.com

Beginning three hours before Wolves games and other Target Center events (like Tuesday’s Kanye West show), this Warehouse District bar features specials up until a half-hour before the start time. Drop by for $3-$4 taps, $4 rails and dollar-off wines. With Target Center just a few doors down, keep sucking down beers right up till tipoff.

Oceanaire

50 S. 6th St., Mpls. • 612-333-2277 • www.theoceanaire.com

Sports fans need not be relegated to light beer and greasy bar fare on game day. This upscale seafood joint offers finer food and drink at nosebleed-ticket prices during its weekday 4-7 p.m. happy hour (and 9 p.m.-close Monday through Thursday). Live like a courtside big-shot with $4 taps, $5 glasses of wine, $6-$7 specialty cocktails and $5-$7 eats.

Sneaky Pete’s

14 N. 5th St., Mpls. • 612-333-8820 • www.ultimatefunbar.com

If Bon Jovi tunes and cheap beer will get your jersey-clad self jacked for a Wolves game, consider Sneaky Pete’s. From 3:30-7 p.m. daily, the downtown Minneapolis party bar offers $3-$4 bottles of beer, $3-$4 mixed drinks ($5 for top shelf) and bar apps galore for $3-$5. With any luck the revelry will continue inside Target Center.
