The Depot Tavern on 7th Street in downtown Minneapolis
Leslie Plesser

Doomtree devotees will fill First Avenue this weekend (and the Triple Rock on Thursday) for the hip-hop collective’s ninth annual Blowout shows. These are perennially some of the liveliest local hip-hop gigs of the year, and there’s no shame in your pre-game beforehand. Especially when reaping these specials.

Depot Tavern

17 N. 7th St., Mpls. • 612-612-338-1828 • www.thedepottavern.com

Proximity to First Ave’s doors isn’t the only thing making the Depot a pre-show no-brainer. The club’s adjacent bar offers $3.50 tallboys daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., perfect for Friday’s (9 p.m.) and Saturday’s (8 p.m.) door times. Consider an after-show return for more midnight-to-close deals.

The Loon Cafe

500 1st Av. N., Mpls. • 612-332-8342 • www.looncafe.com

This longtime sports bar isn’t only a solid event-day spot for jersey-clad jocks. Surely the indiest concertgoers and sports fans alike can appreciate the Loon’s most Minneapolitan of specials — $3 Grain Belt products, all day every day. It might be tempting to bridge the gap between the bar’s weekday 3:30-6:30 p.m. happy hour and Friday’s door time, but use caution.

Dan Kelly’s Bar & Grill

212 S. 7th St., Mpls. • 612-333-2644 • www.dankellys.net

If you don’t mind downing domestics or walking a few blocks, this Irish pub can get you loose on the cheap ahead of Friday and Saturday’s “Bangarang”-a-thons. From 6 p.m. to midnight, 20-ounce select domestic taps fetch a mere $2.75. With the money saved, you could even spring for an ultra-wussy four-block cab ride.
