1984: Madonna's good-girl-gone-bad "Like a Virgin" phase -- most memorable for her star-making, writhing performance of the song in a wedding dress at the MTV Video Music Awards -- consists of white lace corsets, crucifixes and a belt inscribed with the words "Boy Toy."

1985: In early concert appearances and a starring role in "Desperately Seeking Susan," the pop star appears as a club girl with majorly teased hair and a thing for lace gloves, aerobic gear, black rubber bracelets and again, crucifixes.

1986: Circa the "Papa Don't Preach" video, Madge's chopped locks and boyish style recalled Jean Seberg's gamine in Jean-Luc Godard's "Breathless."

1987: In the movie "Who's That Girl?" the Material Girl goes all Marilyn Monroe from the neck up and London punk from the neck down, favoring leather jackets and fingerless motorcycle gloves.

1989: With "Like a Prayer," Madonna momentarily hangs up her Hollywood look, dyeing her hair back to her natural brunette and opting for simplified makeup -- but her penchant for crucifixes and lace negligees persists.

1990: For her iconic "Vogue" video, she returns to her Material Girl-era look, blending the Old Hollywood styles of Monroe, Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich, all of whom she name-checks in the song.

1990: The Blonde Ambition tour is one of the most memorable of all time, thanks in part to her Jean-Paul Gaultier-designed cone-bra and braided high ponytail, said to be inspired by a doll the singer had as a child.

1993: Masks, whips and S&M, oh my! Madonna's "Erotica" incarnation pushes the envelope more than ever, combining menswear styling with Weimar Berlin-inspired bondage wear, knee-high boots and a gold tooth.

1998: Ever the queen of reinvention, Madonna takes on a new persona during her "Ray of Light" era, drawing on her newfound Kabbalah faith with Indian and Moroccan-inspired mehndi (henna tattoos) and forehead bindis.

1996: Madge goes full-on diva as the titular character of "Evita," donning retro Dior-inspired fashions, chic chignons, elaborate hats and jewels, jewels, jewels.

2000: In a low point of her style trajectory, Madonna goes full-on disco cowboy for "Music," complete with chaps, shiny Western shirts and cowboy hats.

2003: In her much-talked-about kisses with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the 2003 MTV VMAs, Madonna harks back to her "Like a Virgin" era, with Spears and Aguilera playing the part of the virginal bad girls in white lace and Madonna dressed in an "Erotica"-era look.

2012: Madonna's looks today are less provocative but no less beloved for their campy appeal, as in her Super Bowl costumes that combined the opulence of Egypt with the Americana of cheerleader uniforms. The looks on her MDNA Tour seem more self-referential than reinvention, with a new Gaultier-designed cone-bra harness, an "Erotica"-evoking menswear look and bondage-inspired lingerie. While she's been critiqued for trying to hold onto her youth with her flesh-baring costumes, you can't fault the gal for reinvigorating her own style.
