Bulldog Restaurant - Northeast venue

Capsule review: Landon Schoenefeld has put his sweat-equity education to very good use at his new gig. As chef at the new-ish Bulldog N.E., he uses Grade A ingredients, strong technique, creative thinking -- and applies them to traditional neighborhood pub genre. Although the results are far from fancy, Schoenefeld's next-generation bar food exudes obvious smarts and attention to detail. Oh, yeah -- it tastes good, too. That includes an exemplary burger (with variations), great fries, overscaled salads, brisket, chili, and a terrific chicken-and-waffles combo. (Rick Nelson, 2/14/2007)

Just go away already.

Yeah, fine, they have good beer. Is that really enough, though? The only other reason I can see someone going here is the shuffleboard table... which they almost never seem to maintain. I'm with the previous dude, there is just a very strange and uncomfortable feel to this place. Just go to Whitey's.   Rating: **

Go for appetizers

I went to the Bulldog with a few friends on a slow wednesday afternoon. The parmesan tater tots were sooo yummy, and the fries were too. The buffalo wings were overly hot (yea, yea I know- I am a Minnesotan!) but good. I don't think I would go there for a full meal, because most items on the menu were not cheap. I liked the high top tables and the brick, although I was a bit confused over the choice of cartoon network playing on one TV, and a European football game on another. Overall, it was good but not outstanding.   Rating: ***

Love the fries!

The best part about the Bulldog is the truffel fries - they are fab! I usually get some fries and a salad to balance them out but really the fries are the reason to go there. There is a room in the back that works very nicely for a private party and can hold a good number of people. If the fries don't put you over the edge, they do make some pretty mean cupcakes.   Rating: ***

Wonderful Food and Service

This place is wonderful. The cooks definitly put their own spin on traditional meals!
My husband and I have tried many different items on the menu for dinner and have yet to receive a bad meal there. Try the Chicken and Waffles...it is definitely worth your wait!
The service has always friendly and helpful when it comes to drink selection and food recommendations. I have never had bad service here!

As for the portions...they are on the small side, but that is because they are portion controlled...which is a good thing!
Enjoy!   Rating: ****

TERRIBLE!!!

DO NOT GO HERE FOR LUNCH!! The portions are WAY too small for the amount you pay. I paid $12 for the tater tot hotdish...it was 4 bites. My buddie got the cob salad for $10 and it was TEENIE! They dont come with sides either...seriously.

The beer is good at night and all that...but the food is not worth it. Go spend 10-12 bucks some where else and get twice as much food!! Hell, make 2 meals out of it!   Rating: *

Stilton Burger, Bella Burger and that Japanese one . . .

I love the food at this place! Their tater tots are some of the best I've had and you get them in all sorts of ways! Each one I've found delicious.

True that their beer prices are a little high but you get the firkin for cheap on wednesdays, a dollar off for happy hours (the only time I will usually treat myself to a delicious Delirium Tremens (try it)) and a sweet beer selection that you will be hard pressed to find at another bar (see Delirium Tremens comment above).

I like the addition of games to this Bulldog as well. I would go to the Uptown location for a "drinking night" but if I wanted to take out a cool girl to a nice but chill place, it would be the Northeast one. I mean, do you remember what used to be there? Boom was horrible! I used to sit at Whitey's angry that I had to hear such crappy music! Thanks Bulldog!   Rating: ****

The food here was great and I was pleased with the vegetarian/vegan selections, but it was too noisy for me.

The fries are great, specifically when you get them made in a special style. I had them with wasabi mayo.

The beer selection IS unique, but there wasn't much I wanted to drink. Anything I liked or was interested in was far overpriced (especially considering Surdyk's is right down the street).

I'd eat here again, but probably on a weekday.   Rating: ***

I don't get it.

I don't like the feel of this place. Something about it makes me turn around and walk over to Whitey's whenever i start to go in there.   Rating: *

Junk Burger Ain't No Trash
posted by CityGal on Aug. 6, '07 at 10:26 PM

This review is entirely on behalf of the Junk Burger at the Bulldog, NE. I've had some of their other offerings, and though relatively tasty, they pale in comparison to Mr. Junk.

It was about twelve years ago that I decided to become a vegetarian. Six years after, I reincorporated poultry and fish, but continued to keep the pork and red meat out. Then, after a bout of drunken peer pressure to try a friends Jack Daniels marinated steak kebab last Summer, I made the decision to ingest cows and piggies if the mood struck. I felt like a burger would be my first full return to the life of a meatitarian, and so, because it had to be a special encounter, I bided my time, waiting to hear through the trials and errors of my friends which burger was the best in town. It was in November that my friend Gregory Jon, a vegetarian who craves burgers with such gusto he has to have them about every three months, suggested we try out the Bulldog. And so we did. I chose the Junk Burger, with cheddar cheese. Even though I ordered mine well-done to avoid any emotional or tummy upset, it was the most juicy, lovely burger, with ultra tangy aged cheddar, thick sliced bacon done to perfection, and a divine garlic aioli (and the fries that accompany it are fantastic as well).

I've since graduated to a medium, sometimes medium-rare burger. I've been to the Bulldog countless times since that first encounter in November, and every time, I order the Junk. Usually, I make whoever is with me share it with me so we can have room in our tummies to nosh on something else, but each bite of the Junk is tastiness cubed.   Rating: *****

Good lord, the burgers!
posted by Terelicte on Apr. 1, '07 at 4:38 PM

The great ambiance created by the exposed brick, high ceilings, congenial crowd and courteous staff takes a back seat to the best burgers in Northeast and perhaps the Twin Cities. The Kobe beef makes The Bulldog's burgers "must eats." The Bulldog is a good fit for conversation with a group of friends or a date. It's also home to a sizeable, unique beer selection.   Rating: *****

My god, the fries!
posted by neveready on Feb. 27, '07 at 10:21 PM

Aside from having what I believe are the best fries in town, this place makes for an awesome after-work joint, or just a nice place to meet up with someone and indulge in good beer and awesome food. I had two glasses of Tremens and a Truffle burger and I was in heaven. Crowd seems like a bit of a mix at this point, but that's to be expected at any new place. Wasn't any louder than I'd expect a bar to be when I was there, so I have no noise complaints. A welcome addition to the neighborhood, no doubt. Minneapolis needs more local joints like this.   Rating: *****

EXTREMELY LOUD
posted by tim7ber on Feb. 18, '07 at 11:21 PM

The food was good - but they haven't decided on their vibe yet. A band played Dolly Parton covers with the volume at 11 and no one in the entire restaurant could hear to have conversations with each other or enjoy their meals. Obviously the owners don't care enough about their customers to recognize that they're more important than a band blasting their music and preventing people from having conversations.   Rating: *

Firkin!
posted by arelys on Feb. 15, '07 at 2:28 PM

I've heard rumors that this new Bulldog was meant to be more restaurant-y and less bar, which is a shame. Because it's a great bar. Come on Wednesday to partake of their firkin--they serve ale actually served from the cask. It's usually pretty well-priced, and always tasty. The food is good too, their burgers are pretty exciting (cool toppings, and the veggie burger is nice). There's plenty of seating--if you can't find a seat in the main bar area, head down the hallway at the back and you'll see more seating in the back room.   Rating: ****
