lemon drop

I love the Turf Club, but...
I've never been served a Lemon Drop in a shot glass before. It was good even though the alcohol burned, but it would have been nice if they could have given it to me one of those juice-size plastic cups like they serve the Vodka Cranberry in. But no biggie.   Rating: ***

good local music plays here!

The bookings at Turf Club are pretty consistently solid local (a few national) acts, and the acoustics are good. The cover is usually pretty cheap, and there are plenty of places to sit comfortably. I don't drink, which I think mildly annoys the servers who dutifully refill my soft drinks. I just make sure to be nice and tip well.   Rating: *****

New Years Eve

The Turf Club is great. They have an awesome New Year's Eve party. They have managed to get Accident Clearinghouse to come out of retirement pretty consistently to celebrate.   Rating: ****

I always have a good time when I go to the turf, kindof miss the christmas lights and the old clown lounge though....

I wish they took Credit Cards, if only because you could catch a dart in the eye while you are trying to use their ATM.

Despite that, it's one of my favorite venues.   Rating: ****

The Grand Old Room

For my money, the best place to take in (or play) a rock show in the Cities. Good beer selection, good acoustics, and that St. Paul history and charm are all there in spades. You can almost picture the place in it's former glory as a 1940's dance hall when you stand on the stage. The room size is just right...not cavernous, not too tight.

As an added bonus, you can stroll downstairs to the Clown Lounge for a change of pace or to talk to your friends while the bands play upstairs.   Rating: *****
