Dinkytowner venue
Capsule review: This shabby little bar is still a home for the local underground and indi music scene. While it’s heavy on hip-hop, there are plenty of rock and punk shows too. (Tom Horgen, 10/3/2008)

Recent Visit I was just at the Dinkytowner to see some bands and I was not impressed with the service. I had to wait forever to get bar service -- at one point, I was standing there being ignored for nearly 30 minutes! Then, once I was finally served, the bartender was rude to me because I had apparently beaten the bouncer for that show and did not have the wristband. I'm not entirely sure why he couldn't check my ID himself (I had it out and ready to hand him), but he could have been a lot nicer. Then, when I went to get the necessary wristband, there was no bouncer at the door -- he frequently left the premesis to walk across the street. |

posted by jlpwrs on Nov. 19, '08 at 3:29 PM I love the Dinkytowner's food. Maybe it's just my passion for hashbrowns or how I like to soak up a night of drinking while it's still happening. Lots of hip-hop shows, free pool nights, amusing staff members and the bathrooms aren't horribly disgusting. |

good for a late night soaker Where else can you get an omelet with Chili in it or freshly made potato chips in Minneapolis at 3 am? Yes it's Dinkytown, but there's sort of an eclectic bunch in there late at night. Also, as Tusk says, they book a lot of music, although they don't get the listings here on vita.mn. |

live hip hop Teh main reason I go here is always for the shows. Theres not really anywhere else in Mpls I can think of that has as many live hip hop shows. If youre a fan a Mpls hip hop but have never been here before, you need to. They have MC battles, beat battles, DJ Stage One on the tables most nights, and the saturday Mic Check shows are usually off the hook. Ive been to MANY venues in the city, the Dinky might not have the best sound, but for sure has the best crowds. People that go more often than not actually act like they paid $5 to go see live hip hop. People are responsive, they take part in the event, and seem to have more of a genuine intent while there. And by the way, if you consider yourself a fan of the local rap scene, but you only own Atmosphere and Doomtree CD's, than you need to rethink...this is the place where MANY of those artists have filed their teeth...and it still is. Theres a whole slew oo MC's and lables that rick the ever living shit out of that stage! Dont miss out. Its packed (but comfortable) on most weekend nights, drinks are good, food is awesome, and the kitchen is open late as hell. Its dark and it feels like a place you can go to get away from poeople (if theres no show), or bring a date to. Pools tables are for sure a plus as well. Rating: **** |

Farmer's Breakfast! Yum! I absolutely love the Dinkytowner's food. It's nice to be able to eat actual good food at the place you go to see local music. The Farmer's Breakfast is greasy, hearty goodness. It is hashbrowns, sausage, eggs, onions, and cheese, all in one delicious skillet. It's pretty big, so make sure that you're actually hungry when you order it. Having someone to help doesn't hurt, either. Rating: **** |
