Q: You’re the owner and operator of the one-year-old 1carservice. Happy birthday! What’s the difference between a taxi and a car service?

A: As a car service, we want to be a positive part of your day and night. Safety, kindness and communication are our top priorities. Once you’ve ridden with us a few times, you’ll get to know us pretty quickly. Oh, and our cars are really nice.

Q: What kind of cars?

A: We are currently a three-car fleet made up of two Audi A6s and a Mercedes-Benz E300.

Q: How long have you been driving for a car service?

A: In 1995 I got a guy to eat a cigar in exchange for a ride home from high school. I started accepting money for rides in May 2010.

Q: What does it take to start your own service?

A: I was fortunate to already be in the industry. What it took for me was support from my friends to start setting goals. That, a couple of cars and tons of patience, have proven to be a solid platform.

Q: What is your strangest on-the-job experience?

A: I once picked up an intoxicated woman in her mid-50s at a bar who berated me for being a liberal and voting for Obama. I let her know that if she couldn’t be nice her ride wouldn’t last very long. When I pulled over to kick her out she started crying about how her dog died six weeks before. Day drinkers can get weird.

Q: Any famous people you’ve driven around?

A: Max Weinberg, he was nice. One time Courtney Love was in my car and she yelled at a valet, “Do you know who the fuck I am?”

Q: What does it take to be a good coachman?

A: An extreme knowledge of the city, its history and its secrets, plus a lot of patience and a gift for amazing conversations.

Q: What is your favorite summertime activity?

A: I like to throw 30 of my closest friends on a party bus and take them tubing down the Cannon River. Spring break forever!
